Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes

Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes

In the Chateau Carreras section of Córdoba, Argentina, there is a stadium called Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes, formerly known as Estadio Córdoba. The Córdoba Province owns the facility, which is primarily utilised for association football and rugby union games as well as occasionally for athletics.

The stadium, like many Argentine stadiums, was constructed in 1976 in anticipation of the 1978 FIFA World Cup. It has a seating capacity of 37,851 spectators.

Although the majority of Córdoba's football clubs have their own stadiums, they frequently choose to play at this one because of its size and comfort, particularly when playing significant games that draw large audiences. This stadium typically hosts Talleres games as well as those of Belgrano, Instituto, and Racing. Home games for the Argentina national football team have also been held here.

In 2006 and 2007, the stadium served as the location for a few Special Stages of the World Rally Championship round titled Rally Argentina.

The stadium underwent a refurbishment procedure between 2010 and 2011. In order to improve the poor view caused by the stadium's shallow shape, new stands were built, the field was sunk 4 metres, the iconic Autotrol scoreboards set up for the 1978 World Cup were replaced with contemporary video screens, and the seating capacity was raised to 57,000, making it the third largest stadium in Argentina by seating capacity. On June 26, 2011, only five days before the 2011 Copa América got underway, it was reopened. After the cup, the stands were completely covered.

The name was changed in October 2010 to Mario Kempes, a former player for Argentina's national team and the tournament's leading scorer in 1978, who was also a native of Córdoba.
