The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced (Olympics LA28 Los Angeles Cricket Flag Football Lacrosse Squash Baseball) the addition of five new sports to the schedule for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. These sports, which will make their Olympic debut or return after a long absence, are flag football, squash, cricket (specifically T20 variation), lacrosse (played as sixes), and baseball-softball. The decision was made in alignment with American sports culture and aims to attract new viewers while showcasing iconic American sports to the world.

Cricket (T20 Variation): Cricket, a massively popular sport in India, is making its return to the Olympics after last being played in 1900. The T20 format, known for its fast-paced, three-hour matches, will be featured in the 2028 Games.

Lacrosse (Sixes Variation): Lacrosse, with its Indigenous North American roots, will be played in the sixes variation, a fast-paced version developed in 2018. Lacrosse was previously contested in the 1904 and 1908 Olympics and appeared as a demonstration sport in 1948.

Flag Football: A non-contact version of American football, flag football is popular among children in the U.S. The addition of flag football was influenced by a campaign by the NFL, highlighting its widespread participation among youngsters.

Squash: Played by 20 million players across 180 countries, squash will finally be featured in the Olympics after previous attempts failed. The sport's unique glass-walled courts allow for innovative venue setups, such as placing courts at iconic locations like the foot of the pyramids or Grand Central Station.

Baseball-Softball: Although not entirely new to the Olympics, baseball and softball are returning after a hiatus. They were last played at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and were not part of the lineup for the upcoming Paris Games in 2024.

These additions aim to make the Olympic Games in Los Angeles unique by incorporating sports that reflect both American culture and global appeal. The inclusion of these sports is expected to enhance the diversity and excitement of the Olympic program, drawing in a broader audience.
